Abstract

This thesis is conducted as a part of the overall aviation aim to further increase aircraft efficiency by exploring the conceptual design of a so-called box wing configuration. The study is performed on real data sets of the Extra EA 400- 500 and consists of two aerodynamic studies, once for the original aircraft which is then complemented by the conceptual box wing configuration design of the EA 400-500. Results are promising in that it can be proven that the box wing design configured aircraft of this study achieved a mean lift coefficient increase of 3.78% and a mean reduction of the drag coefficient of 14.83%. These achievements did not only allow to effectively lower the fuel consumption, but were complemented by a solution fulfilling all stability requirements expected by an aircraft.
