Interfacial energy analysis of supersonic particle impact adhesion conditions at the critical velocity

The critical velocity for adhesion of a microparticle on impact with a substrate is formulated and internal dynamics that lead to critical points are graphically illustrated. The modelling involves energy balance; kinetic, plastic and heat. Analysis of interfacial high strain-rate, the plastic equivalent strain and duration of plastic deformation brings out the internal material dynamics that lead to the critical point for material jetting at the particle substrate interface. Through non-dimensional analysis, the critical velocity is a point where plastic flow velocities, exceed acoustic flow velocities. This illustration may underpin underlying thermal transport and vibrational signatures in microparticle impacts.
