Abstract

This paper presents a discussion on the hyperbolic and Asaoka observational methods for monitoring soil consolidation with vertical drains, specifically addressing their limitations in accounting for missing time problem & secondary consolidation. To overcome these constraints, the discussion introduces two alternative settlement-velocity methods: the settlement-velocity (δ-v) and settlement-log(velocity) (δ-log(v)) techniques. These methods allow for the evaluation of the true coefficient of consolidation (Cv) and ultimate primary settlement (δ_ult) by isolating the effects of secondary compression. Unlike traditional time-centric approaches, these velocity-based methods do not require instantaneous loading & initial conditions, known initial boundary timelines, or the clock time of the load increment. By mapping the settlement state directly against its rate of change, the proposed framework offers a more robust and mathematically simplified approach to extracting fundamental consolidation parameters from standard field data beyond the 60% consolidation stage.
