Abstract

As NASA continues to refine extravehicular activity (EVA) systems for the International Space Station (ISS) and future exploration missions, reliable and efficient tool storage remains critical for astronaut safety and mission success. S.P.A.D.E. (Secure Passive Attachment and Docking Equipment) is a dual-button mechanical docking system that enables astronauts to securely store and retrieve EVA tools with one hand. The design incorporates a spring-loaded locking mechanism that enables single-fault tolerance while maintaining intuitive operation in microgravity. By guiding the tool’s buckle into a spring-assisted locking interface, the system allows tools to be quickly secured and released in varying orientations. S.P.A.D.E. aims to improve EVA task efficiency, reduce the risk of tool loss, and enhance the safety and ergonomics of astronaut maintenance operations. Experimental testing conducted post production verified reliable blind docking and release under 20 lbs of force with only 2.9 lbf of activation force. Future work will optimize lid geometry and fatigue life, enhance debris-resistance, and integrate space-qualified alloys and polymers for operational flight testing.
