Maintenance-Free Solar Generator: A Sun-Tracking Mirror Field and a Zero-Wear NASA-Heritage Engine

Abstract

A concept-stage engineering brief for an unattended, maintenance-free solar generator pairing two components chosen for having no wear-driven failure mode: a sun-tracking field of small, solid-state-actuated mirrors in place of a motorized two-axis gimbal, and a free-piston Stirling engine of the type NASA Glenn has run continuously for 14+ years with zero maintenance and which Qnergy produces commercially today. Sized to match the optical aperture of the Ripasso Energy dish that holds the reported world record for solar-to-electricity conversion, the combination is projected to deliver roughly 20-26 kWe of continuous power.

The brief states its central unresolved dependency directly rather than assuming it away: Texas Instruments' DMD reliability record (>1 trillion cycles) was established on a binary device switching between two fixed ~12 degree hard-stops, not the continuous, wide-angle positioning that full-day, full-year fixed-point tracking requires. Section 6.1 proposes two candidate paths to close that gap -- (A) a continuous, wide-angle MEMS mirror at DMD-class reliability, or (B) retargeting an already-demonstrated narrow-range electronic mirror across several permanently fixed relay mirrors, so the daily and seasonal sun-angle range is absorbed by relay placement rather than by new MEMS hardware -- with their real trade-offs stated, including compounding reflectivity loss and the limited historical precedent for the specific hybrid in Path B. A TRL table assesses each component separately, and all optical-chain assumptions are labeled as cited, derived, or assumed.
