Layout optimization for gyms

Incentives to maintain health through physical exercise have been increasingly disseminated, counting with it, the constant increase in the number of gyms in Brazil and the consequent increase in competition among these companies, the need for a competitive differential in business has grown so that the company can continue in the market and expand. In this context, a common problem is the layout design of gyms, which consists in allocating the equipment with higher priority in the available space or in a way that minimizes the lost space. The gym under study wanted to expand its number of equipment assertively. Thus, the goal of this work is to select the best equipment for the available budget and allocate them in the available space in the best possible way, thus generating a layout project. To solve the problem, a mathematical model was applied in AMPL, considering restrictions and what the gym already had. The result was satisfactory, for the reason of meeting the available budget, as well as the other restrictions, and the equipment being compatible, in layout suggestion, and, therefore, the suggested solution proved to be effective, with a lower expense than the financial effective available.
